Lady Boys of Bangkok protest outside Edinburgh City Council meeting over plans that could see them forced to quit city Festival after 11 sell-out years. (via Deadline Press & Picture Agency)
When I visited a Thai University a couple of weeks ago it was the first time I’d had 9:1 females/males in my class (with half of those 10% males “undecided”—quoted from my friend). That is a high percentage but it’s not uncommon for 20% of boys in a school to identify as transgendered. Ladyboys are more or less a non-issue in Thailand and most kids would not face extreme ridicule as a result. The issue in Edinburgh isn’t to do with a personal attitude towards the ladyboys either, I don’t think, but to do with the state of the Meadows park caused by too many acts staying too long.
