Building works are everywhere in Jompol. These branches act as wooden supports until the infrastructure is up. Of course, now that all the houses have been built, we now seem to be building houses in between the existing houses. Did I mention it is noisy here? Every day around 9am a team of sound artists begin their cacophonous racket - hammering, nailing, cementing, sanding, sawing… It is also government policy to have no fewer than 12 people on any one job. No progress appears to be being made but it is the Thai way to always look busy in case the boss comes round. Another favourite passtime is for one person to stir cement for a couple of hours while five or six other workers stand around her watching. I feel so at home.
