In 1767, Ayutthaya was ransacked by the Burmese army, destroying the kingdom of Siam. It is a city and kingdom with a bloody history and the ruins that survive today are astonishing.

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away

The historic capital, Ayutthaya, is covered with temple ruins. The city was founded in 1350 by King U Thong fleeing from a smallpox outbreak; perhaps the first time that a virus has been responsible for relocating a capital city. It sits at the confluence of the Chao Praya, Lopburi and Pa Sak rivers.
